Even after their owners have passed away, dogs remain loving and loyal to them. Dogs have high emotional intelligence and appear to understand when their loved ones die and can even grieve for them in their own ways; some dogs will even visit their graves.
Like one sweet dog, who can be seen in viral photos holding a seaside vigil for his deceased owner.
Jolie Meja was visiting the seaside town of Punta Negra, Peru, when she noticed an unusual sight: a dog sitting alone on the beach, staring out at the ocean.
“He didn’t appear to be abandoned. “He had a ribbon around his neck and clean fur,” Jolie told The Dodo. “I pet him while waiting for his owner, but no one came.”
Jolie claims she looked after the dog, petting him, but all he wanted to do was watch the waves. Jolie and her family almost took him in after believing he had been abandoned on the beach.
But soon, a man came along and explained that the dog was at the beach every day, for a heartbreaking reason.
“His owner was a fisherman who passed away some time ago,” Jolie wrote on Twitter. “Since then, he stares at the sea every day.”
Vaguito, the dog, appears to understand that his owner went out to sea one day and never returned. Perhaps he realizes his owner has died and is keeping vigil for him, or perhaps he hopes his master will return one day.
“Every time he sees a boat, he gets excited,” Jolie wrote.
She told The Dodo that the dog’s story had “very moved” her. While Vaguito’s story is heartbreaking, she was relieved to learn that he is not alone: “Practically everyone in the area knows the dog and is very fond of him,” she discovered.
Vaguito is cared for by the people in the small community, who provide him with food and shelter. A veterinarian said he is being cared for by a woman nearby.
While nothing can replace Vaguito’s late owner, whom the dog clearly adored, he is still lavished with affection.
It’s truly amazing to see how devoted dogs are to their owners, even after they’ve passed away.
It’s heartbreaking to see how much Vaguito misses his owner, but we’re glad he’s still being cared for — and his story is a touching reminder of a dog’s love.
