Humpback whales are the world’s biggest creatures. Given their tremendous weight (up to 40 tons), these giant beasts are unlikely to completely leap out of the water. Perhaps that’s why this magnificent video of a humpback whale breaching the sea off the coast of South Africa is causing such a stir.

Craig Capehart, a scuba diver, recorded the amazing footage off the coast of Mbotyi, South Africa, on camera. The mature whale, he calculates, weighs approximately 40 tons. Later, he uploaded the astonishing footage to Youtube, where it has received millions of views. When the humpback whale broke close, Capehart and three other divers were on board an inflatable speedboat hunting for sardines so they could follow the predators they attract.

Scuba diver Craig Capehart captured the incredible film off the coast of Mbotyi, South Africa. He estimates that the adult whale weighs around 40 tons. He later posted the incredible clip on Youtube, where it has amassed millions of views. Capehart and three other divers were on board an inflatable motorboat looking for sardines so they could track the predators they attract when the humpback whale approached.

“It appears that no recording of an adult humpback whale leaping completely out of the water has ever been recorded!” Craig noted in the video’s caption, “A very unusual occasion indeed.” “While dolphins and even Great White Sharks have been spotted soaring out of the water, an adult humpback whale is a first!” What a spectacle for these lucky divers to see. Take a look at the unusual footage below!
