The South American country of Peru is widely known for its Incan ruins, such as the world-famous archaeological site of Macchu Picchu. However, there is a new tourist attraction in Cusco that is worth a visit for those seeking a unique experience. Apukunaq Tianan (meaning “abode of the gods”) is a modern tourist attraction featuring an array of sculptures that have been carved directly into the same rock of the mountain. This project is the brainchild of Peruvian sculptor Michael de Titan, who continues the Incan tradition of merging art with nature.

The sculptures at Apukunaq Tianan depict a variety of Andean gods, including Viracocha (or Wiracocha), the creator deity, Pachamama, the Incan Mother Earth goddess, the head of a puma, which is part of the Incan trilogy of symbolic animals, and the face of the last monarch of the Neo-Incan state, Túpac Amaru. De Titan used only a chisel and hammer to create these incredible works of art that range between 15 and 17 meters (49.2 and 55.8 feet) in height.

Located about 40 minutes away from Cusco, Apukunaq Tianan officially opened in 2021 in celebration of Peru’s bicentennial year of independence. This attraction offers a unique opportunity to see the fusion of ancient Andean culture with modern art, all while being surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery.

Visitors can learn more about the sculptures, including current visiting hours and admission prices, by following Apukunaq Tianan on social media. With its stunning views and remarkable sculptures, this new attraction is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Cusco, Peru.

In conclusion, Apukunaq Tianan is a contemporary art installation that showcases the ancient Andean culture in a unique and stunning way. Sculptor Michael de Titan has managed to merge art with nature by carving these incredible sculptures directly into the mountain face. With its opening in 2021 coinciding with the bicentennial year of Peru’s independence, Apukunaq Tianan has quickly become a popular destination for tourists seeking to discover the history and beauty of the Andean gods.
