Photographer Captures Farm Animals’ Underappreciated Beauty

Rob MacInnis is a photographer who specializes in capturing the beauty of farm animals that humans frequently choose for food.

“I had a difficult time dealing with my relationship to photography after this journey,” Rob told Bored Panda after returning from a long trip to South America.

Photographing in areas where there was a lot of poverty made him reconsider photography’s significance in his life and society.

“It seemed irresponsible to disregard the exploitative sides of photography, especially while creating art in such a privileged position,” says the artist.

“I discovered that photographing animals allowed me to critically evaluate myself as well as the photography field.”

“You’re invading their area, so you need to create some limits and develop trust,” he said, comparing shooting images of animals to taking photos of humans.

“Sometimes it’s simple, other times it’s impossible.”

“I met a lot of patient, helpful, and trustworthy farmers, and we did our best with the resources we had.”

“What I did have was a reasonable amount of time, which was quite helpful.”

“Sometimes I’d have to wait an hour for animals to settle down and trust me simply to obtain the ideal headshot.”
