One day, like any other, the Detroit Zoo’s chimp exhibit was surrounded by onlookers on all sides when a playful chase between two chimps took an unintentional turn, and one of the chimps slipped into the muddy moat surrounding the exhibit.
Chimps’ bodies, unlike humans’, are not designed for natural buoyancy in water. As a result, the poor chimp drowned very quickly. None of the zoo staff dared to approach him because they were afraid of the territorial chimps in the colony.
But one man named Rick Swope couldn’t help but cry when he saw the chimp’s plight. He crossed the enclosure instinctively and dove into the moat. However, the murky water made it impossible for him to find the chimp.
The crowd had begun to applaud Rick by this point. They assisted him in getting to the chimp by guiding him through the water. The chimp family was only grateful and let him return unharmed as he brought the chimp back to safety. Rick’s selfless and brave act of kindness has won our hearts today!
