Miguel ngel Escobar and his family were sailing off the coast of Honduras the other day when something caught their eye — and immediately broke their hearts.
They discovered a massive sea turtle entangled in some tree roots near the water’s edge along a remote stretch of coast.
“I assumed she was gone,” Escobar told The Dodo. “We felt so sorry for her.”
However, the turtle was not dead. She’d simply given up hope.
But there was hope on the way.
Despite the fact that the turtle appeared to have been trapped there for some time and had most likely died, Escobar decided to take a closer look just in case.
She remained motionless as he approached, pulling the boat to shore.
“When I touched her, she immediately let out a sigh and began to move her head,” Escobar explained.
Escobar sprang into action as a result.
Escobar began cutting the root trapping the turtle with a knife until it was weak enough to be broken.
She was finally free after a few moments.
Escobar had literally saved her life.
The once lifeless-looking turtle transformed into a ball of energy in an instant.
“I assumed the turtle would need to rest on the shore and regain strength,” Escobar explained. “But she swam away instantly, strong and fast, like she was jumping for joy.”
She was given a second chance. The turtle swam out to deeper waters after briefly lingering near the beach.
Escobar believes the turtle became entangled in the root while passing over the embankment along the shore after coming ashore to lay her eggs. And now that she is free, there will be many more generations of her descendants.
“I’m glad I could help her,” Escobar said. “It’s a fantastic feeling.”
